What is 432 Hz music?

In short: "432 Hz music" usually means music tuned so that the note A is 432 Hz instead of the standard 440 Hz, or music with an added 432 Hz tone. Some listeners find it pleasant. There's no reliable scientific evidence that any particular frequency has health effects.

What does 432 Hz mean?

Hz (hertz) measures how many times a sound wave vibrates per second. Western music is normally tuned so that the A above middle C is 440 Hz, the international standard since the mid-20th century. "432 Hz tuning" lowers that A to 432 Hz, which makes everything very slightly lower in pitch (about a third of a semitone).

The phrase is also used more loosely, for music that includes a steady 432 Hz tone. These are different things, so it's worth checking which one a track means.

Does 432 Hz music do anything special?

Some people say 432 Hz sounds warmer or calmer, and if you enjoy it, that's a perfectly good reason to listen. Claims that it's more "natural" or has health benefits, though, aren't supported by reliable evidence. Treat it as a matter of taste.

What is a binaural tone?

A binaural tone (often called a binaural beat) plays a slightly different pitch in each ear: for example, 200 Hz on the left and 210 Hz on the right. Your brain combines them and you hear a gentle pulsing at the difference, here 10 times a second.

  • You need headphones. On speakers the two tones mix in the air before they reach you, so the effect is different.
  • The research is mixed. Binaural beats are studied, but results so far are inconsistent. They're best thought of as a listening texture some people like.

Are headphones comfortable for sleep?

Regular earbuds can be uncomfortable lying on your side. Some people use soft headband-style sleep headphones. Keep the volume low, especially with anything in or on your ears for a long time.
